Writing Homework Week 4
This week you will need to read a newspaper article. Read an article in the sports section of the leader on Tuesday 12th August or another current newspaper and write a report on a sports article. It may be a good week to report on an Olympic sport that has been in the paper.
In your report remember to state:
- Headline
- What happened?
- Where did it happen?
- Who was involved?
- Other important information
- How you felt about what has been stated in the article.
Please try to post your homework before or on Friday 15th.

Tough man overawed
Since the Beijing Olympics started Cronulla policeman and kayak paddler, Tony Schumacher can’t desribe the feeling after attendingthe ceremony. He felt proud of himself representing Australia when he marched at the Birds Nest. He said what made it enjoyable was not really the the surf lifesaving kayakers marching together but Ky Hurst marching with them.
I felt great and happy because i am interested in the Beijing Olympics.

DIAMONDS
Michael Diamond competed in the Trap Shooting at the Beijing Olympics. He is a former Shire Olympic Champion and just missed out on making the medal shoot-off. He was placed 4th.
I like the dual Olympic Champion and World Champion’s attitude and determination when he said he was extremely happy to have competed in the Olympics and also stated “I will return”.

Seymour ready for new ball game.
While Brett Kimmorley is putting in a great effort before he leaves next season Brett Seymour can’t wait until he gets his new number 7 jersey. Because Kimmorley is leaving that gives the five-eighths (number 6) permission to take his place. Trent Barett will be coming into the Sharks team from France to give the Sharks another player. Seymour says that he likes to play next to Noddy (Kimmorley) but is going to love playing half back in the Cronulla Sharks 2009. I personaly think that this is a great chance for him to pick up on his career as a upcoming footballer. Good luck Seymour and farewell Kimmoreley.

Hollywood Finish
Kate Hollywood’s women Hockeyroos side played South Korea who’s boss and came down with a amazing win 5-4 and at one point 4-1.The men’s Hockeyroo side also made a remarkable win 6-1 after beating the magnificent Canada and their star player Jamie Dwyer got carried off the pitch in a stretcher. So both of the Australian hockey teams will go onto the next round and hopefully beat whatever is coming at them.

NO MORE THOMPSON
The Olyroos striker Archie Thompson has had a major injury to his ankle. Now that Thompson can’t play, reserve Nikita Rukevytsa will take his place in the clash with Ivory Coast.
Archie is one of three over-aged players followed by Jade North and David Carney. He sustained a bad knock to the ankle playing against Argentina.
This news sounds really bad for the Olyroos, however a great opportunity for Nikita Rukevytsa.

*** RUSSELL TO SHOW TRUE GRID IN USA ***
A 19 year old boy named Tod Russell has been selected to play gridiron in the Australian under-20 team. He is set to leave on Saturday to play four matches in the USA.
Russell has also played rugby league as a junior for the Bosco Bulldogs and the Engadine Dragons, but enjoys gridiron, being heavily influenced by his father who has played 19 seasons of gridiron.
Russell enjoys the thought process involved in gridiron. There is a lot more positional training compared to league and there are positional coaches to focus on each position.
Russell will be playing the position of “receiver”. This position tries to open up the game and spread the defence out.
He will be playing matches in Arizona, San Francisco and California.
The purpose of this report is to inform the public of the talent and achievements of this young man.

Forget Eric the Eel, meet Stany the Stingray
report in the Sydney Morning Herald, Sport Section, Thursday 14th August 2008
This report concerned a swimmer from the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Stany Kempopo Ngangola. He received a wild card entry for the 50m Men’s Freestyle event at the Beijing Olympics. Allegedly his seed time for this event is 1 min 15 sec! He was compared to the wild card entry for the Sydney Olympics Eric Moussambani from Equatorial Guinea who captured the world’s attention with a very slow swim and generated a lot of debate about whether he should be allowed to compete.
I think that it is a little unfair for him to compete at the Olympics with a time far slower than even I can swim 50 metres freestyle. On the other hand I don’t live in a war torn country that only has two pools (one 15m and one 25m)!

City 2 Surf
This year the City 2 Surf was won by an Australian called Martin Dent. It is the first time someone from Australia has won in 11 years. His time was 41 minutes and 12 seconds. The first woman to cross the line was Rebecca Lowe with a time of 47 minutes and 18 seconds. The City 2 Surf started in the city and ended at Bondi Beach.
I feel this is a great acheivement from Martin and he should be very proud of himself.

STINGERS FUME OVER DIRTY PLAY
At the Olympics the women’s Auzzie waterpolo team are angry with the referees calling a goal for Hungary at the last minute making it a draw. The Stingers(Auzzies)Coach Greg Mcfadden quoted “It’s total rubbish how the referees were calling the game.”
The Coach is now worried that the draw will ruin their chances to go to the semis. The Stingers are also angry about Hungarians dirty playing and how Nikita Cuffe got poked in the eye and is still recovering from the eye-injury.
The person who wrote this article didn’t really tell us what the referees did wrong so I don’t know what I feel about what happened

The swimmers are not the only people winning medals for Australia.Young Jacquiline Lawerence from rural New South Wales grabbed silver in the womens single kayak K1 final. The races were held at the slalom course at the Rowing and Canoeing park. She was very surprised to even win a medal at the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games.

Tamsyn Tactics Pay Off
Tamsyn Lewis set the pace for her 800m heat, she made sure the time was fast enough for her to advance to the semi finals even though she was not amongst the placegetters.
The track and field events take place within the Birds Nest Stadium in Beijing.
The article only focused on Tamsyn Lewis.
The article also mentions the controversy surrouding the pre game dismissal of 7 Russians for drug cheating.Lewis was shielded from the outside world during the games preperation in Darwin by her brother who insisted that her mobile phone stayed off.
There is more to winning a race than just running Tamsyn has shown that tactics pay off.

The win gives Cronulla 32 points which means they are equal first with the Premiers Melbourne and last years runners up Manly with 4 rounds to go. I feel excited that the Sharks have a chance of getting in to the grand final.

Working on a skateboard
Tracey B turned up for her first job- on a skateboard. Tracey was born without any legs and an arm. She grew up in the area so not too many people were surprised to see her going in and out of her house and to work on a skateboard. She rides a special scooter to take to take her 7 year old son, Bryce to school.
Before she started working part-time for the Council, she says no-one would give her a chance. People couldn’t see past her appearance.
I think it is great to see someone like Tracey doing things like that.

‘Hung Out To Dry By Suit Snub’
An article in the Sunday Telegraph on the 24th August 2008 reports that Australia’s paralympic swimmers fear that they won’t be able to use the superfast LZR racer swimsuits because the Olympians were seen as more important. The paralympic team were going to be given the leftover swimsuits but there might not be enough for the thirty five of them. They were told they had to wait until after the Olympic Games to find out if there were any leftover suits for them to wear.
I don’t think this is fair because the paralympic team should be just as important as the olympic team.

!!!STEVIE HOOKER!!!
Stevie Hooker won the first gold medal by a male Australian for Athletics. An Aussie hasn’t won it for forty years. It was when he soared over 5.90m in the Pole Vault last night. Five times Stevie had the chance to beat Yevgeniy Lukyanenko of Russia, but he missed four times and on his fifth time he won gold. All of the Aussie fans were screaming and cheering for him.
