Australia at the Olympics
The Olympics in Beijing are on the way. The opening ceremony was a wonderful event but the athletes reported that it was so very hot that all the clothes they were wearing were soaked through with sweat by the time they finally witnessed the lighting of the Olympic Flame in the stadium.
Each day we will follow the progress of our team and record the highlights as comments on this post.
Keep checking the comments to see how well Australia is going.
Check out this interactive world map that changes as each country wins a medal. It is amazing. You can find out how many medals Australia won at each of the games it participated in since 1896.

What are your thoughts on this??
We all know how bad the pollution is in Beijing and this has been a great concern to all Athletes. Did you know the China government are shooting Chemicals into the atmosphere by land to air missile guns so as to change the weather and make it rain which then clears the smog. They do this late at night so no knows what they are up to and it all seems to be very secretive. Do you think this is right?

Olympic Update
Leisel Jones claimed her first individual Gold Medal in Beijing with a major victory in the women’s 100m breastroke final. Leisel was a red hot favourite after swimming a second faster than her nearest competitor. She comfortably claimed Gold in Olympic Record Time of 1:05.17.
It takes me that time to swim 50 metres (well only sometimes!!!!!!)

It was wonderful to hear the excited parents of Hayden Stoeckel after he won Bronze in the 100m Backstroke today. They are so proud of him and said that he has worked hard to get to the Beijing Olympics and is very quick in the pool but not very quick at cleaning his bedroom.

Just a bit of Beijing trivia – Pretty much every athlete in the Beijing Olympics loves the famous peking duck dish. Chefs are ordering 300 ducks a day, now they have had to put it up to 400 ducks a day.

Eamon Sullivan and Stephanie Rice
Stephanie and Eamon has won another gold medal and Eamon has set a record that another person called Zimbabwean Kirsty from Coventry broke and it only lasted for five minutes. They both have won gold medals so will Eamon get back with Stephanie?

Yes Albert it does seem as though Stephanie and Eamon will probably end up together again but I think they did the right thing to separate and concentrate on the Olympic games and win GOLD.

Chenaya I can’t imagine that any country could be putting more chemicals in the air than is absolutely necessary through day to day activity but I suspect that the air quality is pretty poor in China and they are desperate to make a good impression.

When i was looking at the TV a person received a bronze medal and threw his medal on the groundand walked away. Australia came after him and he received the medal. So he was pretty lucky.

Today when the mens 1500m freestyle Hackett was most of the time switching place from 2 to 1 to 2 to 3 to 2 at the last 2 laps he was racing his heart out but couldn’t get to 1 and missed out by an arm’s length which was very unlucky for Hackett

SILVER MEDAL FOR ANNA MEARES – CYCLIST
What a great result for Anna Meares. Anna was badly injured and almost died after an accident in Los Angeles only 7 months ago. She suffered a serious back injury. She recovered really well and worked very hard, thanks to her determination and support from her family, friends and coaches. A silver medal is a big achievement for Anna. Congratulations on a fabulous race!!!

Gold Gold and more Gold
I watched the 10m diving competition and the pole vaulting in which Australia received Gold medals. As I watched the excitement was growing, I was so proud of Steven Hooker for his Olympic record jump of 5.96m. When Mathew Mitchham was completing his last dive it was so perfect everyone knew he had made it he was the gold medalist. He was so emotional overcome with joy and disbelief that I shed a tear for him. The K1 canoe event won by Ken Wallace was also terrific. It has been a solid last few days for the Australians giving it their all.
