HURRICANE GUSTAV – NEW ORLEANS
I have read about the real possibility of a Hurricane hitting New Orleans on the Internet and also heard about it on the news.
I have interviewed my Dad about this.
Q: What are your thoughts about this hurricane?
A: Will it actually hit New Orleans as predicted and when? Also how big will it be? If it stays at category 5 it will cause major damage and destruction.
Q: If you were there, would you leave and what would you take?
A: Yes, I would leave. I would take my family, some clothing and food supplies, important documents and personal items.
Q: Where would you go and how would you get there.
A: The Government is providing transport to evacuate people, but I would take my car. I would go to higher ground or interstate.
Q: Do you think homes will be there afterwards.
A: Most likely not, but some people may find some belongings.
Q: How do people recover from this type of event?
A: People will go back to New Orleans and try to rebuild. It will take a lot of work and positive attitude. Hopefully the Government will give more aid to residents and have learnt from what happened after Hurricane Katrina hit the same area only 3 years ago.
I am really glad we don’t live in an area that is affected by Hurricanes. I just can’t imagine what it would be like to lose everything except what you could pack into a car. I hope if the hurricane hits, it looses force and won’t be as damaging as everyone is saying.

I have read a story about four children locked on a balcony . Here is my interview with my mum.
Q 1
What do you think of an adult couple locking their four children outside on a balcony?
A I think it is disgraceful . They are putting their own children at risk.
Q2
Why do you think they went to bed and left 4 children outside and 2 children inside unattended?
A Maybe they were affected by drug or alcohol, or just unable to cope with the child’s needs.
Q3
Do you think that they had done this on purpose or by accident?
A No I think they were neglecting the children, they were not caring for them.
Q4
What do you think they should be charged with?
A I think they should be charged with neglect and will probably have the six children taken away for a while, until they get themselves together.

The Qantas Update!
I have read the story about the Qantas planes and do they need to be updated for safety reasons? This is the interview with my dad.
Q:Do you think Qantas planes need to be updated?
A: I think they need to make sure that their plane are safe and comfortable for the passengers to have a nice flight.
Q: Do you think Qantas will have another safety failure?
A: I think they will be working hard not to make this doesn’t happen again for that it will cost a lo more money than necessary.
Q:Would there need to be safer and bigger planes?
A:Definitely safer planes but not so much bigger.
Q: Will less people want to fly Qantas than other plan companies?
A: If they continue to have the safety and maintenance issues tham probably yes.
I am pleased that any of my family weren’t on one of those flights or any close or not so close friends were on them.

Hurricane Gustav
I have read about the possibility of a hurricane called Hurricane Gustav hitting a place called New Orleans. I have interviewed my Mum.
Q.Where will this hurricane probably be?
A.It is heading towards the coast of south-east America in the Gulf of Mexico and will hit New Orleans.
Q.What will probibly be affected by it?
A.New Orleans will probibly be flooded, lots of the houses will be damaged and if people don’t leave they could be drowned.
Q.What would you do in a hurricane?
A.You lock all the windows and doors, nail wood over any windows so they don’t break, turn of the electricity, remove anything from the yard that could be an airborne missiles, collect any valuables and insurance policies and then quickly evacuate. If there is no time to evacuate, stay inside with a radio on.
Q.If you were in a hurricane how would you feel?
A.I would feel frightened and worried.
I am glad that I don’t live in a place where there are hurricanes.

Parking Fines
I have read a story about parking fines in the newspaper. This is the interview with my mum.
Q.Do you think motorists have a right to complain about parking fines?
A.Yes and no. Parking limits need to be in place to ensure everyone gets a fair go. However sometimes you get a parking ticket when your one or two minutes late and that hurts.
Q.Do you think one fine everyone 27 seconds is fair?
A.Definitely not. That seems outrageous to me. Someone must be making a lot of money.
Q.Have you ever got a parking ticket?
A.Yes. Once when I was dropping you off at school. I pulled into the bus zone and waited about 30 seconds for a car to move out of the drop off zone. I ended up not having to pay it because I lodged a protest and the ticket was cancelled.
Q.Do you think signs are perposly confusing so councils can give out more fines.
A.Yes and no. I think yes where there are multiple time limits in the one area. Also where you have to park rear or front to kerb for no obvious reason.
I think they should decrease the amount of parking fines because it seems like they’re making to much money.

!!Greg Bird!!
I have read an article about Greg Bird and his girlfriend Kathryn Milligan. I interviewed my dad.
1. Whats your opinion on what he has done?
A. If he has hit Kathryn with the glass, as reported in the media, then I believe he should be charged. I also think it is a shame that high profile sports people seem to continually let down the young fans that look up to them, particularly after drinking alcohol.
2. Greg was charged with Grievious Bodily harm. Do you think it is too harsh?
A. The injuries reported by the media sounded quite severe. I think under the circumstances, the charge is appropriate.
3. Do you think Greg should be locked away?
A. I think a court should determine the appropriate punishment for Greg. The community are influenced by media reports and the fact that Greg is a high profile sportsman. A court will not be influenced by these factors and will only be guided by the facts. If the court finds Greg guilty, a judge will impose a penalty that the court believes is a suitable punishment for his actions.
4. Do you think Ms Milligan should give evidence?
A. I think victims of violent crime and in particular domestic violence should stand up to the people that have hurt them and give evidence in court.
Brooke’s opinion:
In my opinion Greg Bird should think about what he’s done and set a better example for kids that admire him. I also think it is unfortunate when celebrities ruin their careers because of alcohol and drugs.

European reaction to Russian intervention in Georgia
I have heard about it on the news and read about it on the internet. I interviewed my mum.
Q: What do you think about the Russians invading Georgia?
A: I think it was wrong of Russia to intervene in Georgia. I also think that the Russian government chose a very convenient time to intervene in Georgia when they thought that the eyes of the world would be on the Beijing Olympic Games.
Q:Why do you think some European countries will not want to condemn Russia?
A: Russia is a very powerful country and controls about 40% of oil and gas supplies to Europe. While European leaders will want to send a meesage that they don’t approve of Russia’s action they will not want to jeopardise their energy supplies with the winter approaching.
Q:How do you think the countries will vote?
A: I think that England and some of the former Soviet Bloc countries will condemn Russia and want tough santions but other countries like Italy for example will be softer because they are worried about an energy crisis.
Q: Do you ever think that it is right for one country to invade another?
A: No I don’t think so. Sometimes when terrible things are happening in a country, for example, when one group of people is oppressing or killing another group it might be necssary to intervene. There have been recent examples like Kosovo and the former Yugoslav republic. Then I think it is better if this is done by a group like the United Nations.
My Opinion:
I think that the war in Georgia is wrong and Russia should get their tanks and guns out.

Driver Injured As Crane Topples Onto Roof
I have interviewed my mum.
Q. Do you know the person who’s house got broken?
A. Yes, her name is Jackie Leech. She and I both used to work together when we were Flight Attendants on Qantas.
Q. What do you think is going to happen to the crane driver?
A. First of all I am glad that nobody is badly hurt and I would imagine that the crane driver would be stood down until an investigation of the accident has been found.
Q. How the home owners afford to repair their house if they only finished renovating on Friday?
A. They would have home insurance that covers the cost of repairs but they might still have to pay an excess amount.
Q. What do you think went wrong?
A. Hard to say but maybe the weight was too heavy for the base of the crane or it could’ve been the levelling feet were not placed correctly but we will all find out about the investigation.
I think that it was just an accident and I am just glad that everyone’s not badly hurt.

Greg Bird!!!!!
I have read a story on this in the Leader and found out that football sensation Greg Bird glassed his girlfriend Kathryn Milligan.
(I interviewed my dad on this)
Q. Greg Bird has been charged with injuring his girlfriend by pushing a glass into her face. What do you think of this famous football player?
A. If it’s true it would be a terrible thing for anyone regaurdless if ther’ye a footy player or not.
Q. Do you think that Greg is guilty?
A. We wont really know the truth until he shows up in court in early October.
Q. Do you think he will ever play football again?
A. It all depends on if he is found guilty or innocent. If guilty I think he may play in England, if innocent I think he may still be unwamted in Australia.
Q. Why do top line football players like Greg Bird get into so much trouble?
A. Some football players haven’t yet matured as responsable men. The NRL, the clubs, and the players themselves each have to take responsobility for this before things can improve.
My Opinion is that footy players shouldn’t waste their money on drugs and alchahole and maybe look for a job like Lance Thompson and he doesn’t get arrested or any bad things happen to him.

Parking fines
I read about parking fines on the internet.
Here are the questions I asked my mum.
Q. Do you think parking fines?
A. Well if they park illegally then they should.
Q. Do you think that parking rear or front to the
kerb is just time wasting?
A. Yes
Q. Do you think the signs are confusing?
A. No because it is written clearly from
what day to what time.
Q. Do you think the fines are too
expensive?
A. Yes because they can charge you hundreds
just for parking the wrong way.
My opinion is that they deduct the amount of charge.

15 year old kid shot dead
I read on the SMH (Sydney Morning Herald) internet that a 15 year old kid got shot. I interviewed my dad.
Q: Do you think he was shot by a person he knows?
A:Yes, because the police think that one of the teenagers had shot him.
Q: Has the police found any suspects?
A: Yes, they found a teenager who might have killed him.
Q:Has the suspect being held questioned by the police
A:Yes, because they want to if he killed him or not.
Q:Have they established the crime scene and preparing a report about.
A:Yes, forensic police and the homicide were at the scene and prepared a report and crime scene.
I think that he shouldn’t of been shot then all this stuff wouldn’t happen and why do it because it doesn’t really change anything. You also might get caught and arrested.

Colin(Coleen)The Whale
I have interveiwed my dad on this non-current news but it was very big news infact and these results from my dad are very interesting.
1. Do you think they should of killed Coleen?
A. Yes I do because the whale has been seperated from its mother and they cant replace her mother like humans can. Coleen was also in pain and was suffering and wouldn’t survive in the ocean.
2. Why do you think they didn’t use the recipe that America used?
A. The recipe isn’t proven to be good and it came down to money like if we spend it on a whale we could be spending it on humans.
3. Why do you think they didn’t save Coleen?
A. To use for Scientific reserch and could use this reserch to figure out human cures like cancer, type 1 and 2 Diabetes and behaving issues.
4. They said they were gonna try to find Coleens mother, why do you think they were unsuccesful?
A. There was 4 coppers, 2 cost guard boats that searched 5000km radius but unfortunetly didn’t find her after 4 days. They probably didn’t find her either becaue she was injured, wounded or already heading for Antartica.

Schipper Decides to Jump Ship
I read an article in the Daily Telegraph about Jessica Schipper’s coach, Ken Wood, selling her swimming porgram to the Chinese. I interviewed my dad.
1. Do you think what Wood did was wrong?
No, there is no such thing as an exclusive swimming coach. Jessica Schipper was only paying him $1500 a year, this doesn’t buy you exclusivity. Ken Wood was up front with what he did and you can’t blame him for earning a living from his chosen profession. Unfortunately there is not much room for loyalty in elite sports these days.
2. Was it the right choice for Jessica to swap coaches?
Yes, definately. It would have been hard for Jessica to move forward whilst there is tension between her coach and her parents. After 10 years it is probably time for a fresh change.
3. Do you think Schipper will go well with a new coach at the next Olympics?
Yes, I believe she will. As a former world record holder she obviously has the ability. At 21 she is still young enough to achieve gold at the next Olympics.
4. Do you think what Wood did affected Schipper’s performance?
We’ll never know for sure,. I think it is just a case of Jessica being beaten by a better swimmer on the day.
In conclusion I think it would have been nice if Schipper’s coach had showed more loyalty and I would not like to be in that situation.

An Accident waiting to Happen!
I did an interview with Mum on the ambulance service in Bundeena-Maianbar.
Q. Do you think this is a sensible idea from the State Government?
A. No I don’t think this is a good decision because the people of Bundeena and the visitors to the area pay taxes and are therefore entitled to these services.
Q. How do you think the people of Bundenna will feel about this?
A. They feel angry and neglected by their Government and I imagine they feel a little nervous and frightened by this situation.
Q. Why has this decision been made?
A. My understanding is that this is purely a decision based on funding with the Government trying to save money in this area.
Q. If you lived in the area what would you do?
A. I would launch a campaign directed at the State Government and the local member hightlighting the inappropriateness and danger associated with this decision. I would contiue to do this until the decision was reversed.
My Opinion:
I think was a ridiculous decision made by the State Gvernment because it is putting the WHOLE of Bundenna in danger and risk!!!

~ KIDS WORK FOR OUR FUTURE ~
This article appeared in the Sunday Telegraph on the 28th of August 2008.
I interviewed my sister about this issue.
Q1: Are you worried about climate change?
A: Yes! As a result of Global Warming and the increase in temperatures, it could result in detrimental effects on the world’s biosphere.
Q2: Do you understand the role that trees play in fighting climate change?
A: Yes ! Trees and all other plants absorb carbon dioxide, chlorofluorocarbons (CFC’s) and other greenhouse gases, which in turn lowers the amount of greenhouse gases in our atmosphere to a stable level, and allows the natural greenhouse effect (which is beneficial to human survival) to take place.
Q3: Do you think that people are doing enough to help fight climate change ?
A: Some people are taking the appropriate actions, whilst others need to step up and work together when fighting this global issue.
Q4: What do you think about schools that work together with their students by planting trees and native species ?
A: I believe that it is a good thing as it enables the students to have a hands-on approach to ceasing climate change, and not just reading about it in a textbook!
All children should take part finding ways to combat the climate change crisis. Planting trees with a hands on approach is a great way to start.

I read the story about Qantas aircraft needing to be updated. It concerned me because my Dad flies a lot with work. This is my Interview with my Dad.
Q: Dad, are worried about the safety of Qantas aircraft?
A: Zac, I know I fly a lot, but I always feel very safe traveling with Qantas.
Q: With all of the small accidents that have been happening, do you think there will be more problems?
A: Look, I think Qantas has had a run of bad luck, and the media probably makes it worse than it is, but it does concern me a little.
Q: Would you consider using a different Airline?
A: No, Qantas is my pick, I have flown Virgin and Jetstar, but I am much happier with Qantas.
Q: Do you think the servicing of Qantas aircraft, should be done overseas?
A: No, I think this is a mistake, Australian safety standards are the best in the world, so why should we take this of shore and jeopardize our safety.
It worries me a little when my Dad is flying around Australia, but Qantas still has the best record in the world.

~Global Warming~
I’ve have chosen Global warming because it’s a very current issue and is every were. Here is a series of questions you can read that are answered by my dad:
Q1: Do you know what ‘Global Warming’ is?
A1: Yes. It is to do with rising temperatures Throughtout the world.
Q2: How do you think ‘Global Warming’ is going to hit Australia?
A2: The higher the temperature rises the more risk of skin cancer and more risks of droughts rising.
Q3: What solutions do you think will help prevent it or slow it down?
A3: I think That reducing the amount of carbon emmisions will help prevent it as well as us trying to reduce the amount of carbon emmisions coming from our homes.
Q4:Do you think us individually we can help reduce the effects of Global Warming?
A4: Do not use spary cans and the unrecyclable cans. We also try and reduce the amount of driving we do.
Q5:Have we educated people enough about ‘Global warming’?
A5: We have definately not. We need to teach more people about how to reduce ‘Global Warming’.
I do believe in most of these problem but not all of them. I enjoyed surveying my dad.

Hurricane Gustav.
I have written about a hurricane that I have read about on the internet and heard about on the news.
I interveiwed my mum.
Q. If a hurricane hit where you lived, would you leave and what would you bring?
A. Yes I would leave if the authortiys said to do so . I would bring my family, food, water and clothing just the basics and the rest would depend where we would be staying.
Q. Where would you go and what transpotation would you use to get there?
A. We would probably use both the four wheel drives as combined they seats eight people and we could round up other extended family too and head off to Melbourne probably if time permitted otherwise we could grab the camping gear and head off wherever we are advised by the authorities.
Q. Do you think there would be anything left (eg. houses, belongings…) through the hurricane?
A. It would be more than likely that there would be nothing left that wasn’t destroyed, but I would hope that you may find a few items.
Q. How would you feel after this devistating hurricane had happened to you?
A. I would be extremely grateful that my family had survived and at the same time overwelmed with greif and compassion because there may be many people killed and more than likely the devistating destruction of our city.
I am very glad that we don’t live in a place where hurricanes accure but I am also sorry for the people who live in an area where hurricanes can happen.

495 bodies found as Haiti floodwaters recede
I read about this from the ABC News on the internet.I interveiwed my dad.
Q:How do you think all these people died in the flood.
A:Most would have died from drowning.
Q:What do you think the flood has now done to Haiti.
A:Haiti is one of the pourest country’s in the world, so the flood will only make it even harder for the people to have a basic standard of living.
Q:What would you do if you were somebody in Haiti.
A:I would try to rebuild my life by building a new home and crops to feed my family.
Q:If you were a Haitian person and a reporter came to you and asked you about how you felt about your city being destroyed what would you say.
A:I would be devastated at having my country destroyed by so many floods. We have had three storms in the last three weeks and have lost so many lives.
If I lived in a country where storms and floods come I would maybe go to another country to live in that doesn’t get storms and floods.

I read an article about some Chinese miners trapped in a coal mine after a flood on ABC news, I interviewed my Sister on this.
Q: Do you think the Chinese miners who survived shouldn’t be allowed to mine anymore to keep themselves out of danger?
A: Yes their licenses should be taken away because it’s very risky and they could kill themselves.
Q: Do you think the other miners might be alive still after the flood?
A: No because there wasn’t any air inside the mine it was all filled with water and even if they could swim they wouldn’t be able to breath.
Q: Do you think people would close up the mine after what has happened?
A: Yes because it could happen again and because of the safety of the other miners.
Q: What would you do if you were one of the miners trapped in the mine?
A: I would try to swim to the surface and save the others if I could.

A.If my home was crushed I would be shattered especially if I had no insurance.
Q.How do you think the hill collapsed so easily with no signs of it being close to broken?

A. I thought it was funny and it would be weird to see a man pushing a lawnmower across the road.
Q. Do you think it was a good way to raise money?
A. Maybe, but it could have been better publicised.
Q. Why do you think he wanted to do that when he could have just given the charity money himself?
A. Because he wants to raise awarness in the community for the brave heart charity and he wants to raise more money than he could ever give himself.
Q. Do you think he will acheive both the marathon and the money?
A. I think he will make it to Sydney but unfortunately I think he won’t raise $1 Million.
I think that it was very funny but i do wonder were he got his food and water if he didn’t take his whole wallet.

A:Yes yes I do.
My opinion:I think Barack Obama will win and do a better job than George W Bush.

Q1. What do you think about Wendell leaving the Dragons? Are you sad, happy or don’t you care?
I’m sorry to see Wendell leave the Dragons because he is a very good winger and strengthens the team because of his ability and experience. However, he should be free to go and the Dragons have said that was OK.
Q2. Do you think that what happened to Sonny-Bill will happen to Wendell?
No because Wendell will play until the end of the season and has sought the Dragons approval. The fans will be sad to see him go.
Q3. If you were in Wendell’s position what would you do?
Book a plane ticket and wave goodbye.

I would be fine with his decision. The club and Wendell have agreed to part company. I would wish Wendell all the bestand try to win the game against Manly this weekend.
My Opinion: I think it is fine if Wendell wants to go because he let the team know before he left and it is his decision so I hope he does well in the UK Super League.

~~Beijing Olympics 2008~~
I have read about this topic on the internet and seen this topic on the news and so I interviewed my mum about it.
Q: Should the Para Olympics get the same amount of coverage as the normal Olympics.
A: Not necessarily as the paraolympians are a smaller group than the able bodied athletes. However I think there should be acknowledgment of their achievements as tey put in a huge effort to reach the olympics and they inspire others with disablilites to have a go.
Q: Do you think the air quality in Beijing affected the athletes performances?
A: Not really. World records were broken in all sports. The only thing I noticed which affected the athletes was the extreme heat.
Q: Do you think the athletes used drugs at the Beijing Olympics?
A: Not that I’m aware of. I think that the techniques and equipment used by athletes today have helped them to improve the times. If an athlete does use drugs they are silly as many tests have been developed to catch them and if they win the will definitely be tested.
Q: Do you think Beijing 2008 was the best Olympics?
A: No. I think the opening ceremony was spectacular but I think the atmosphere around the venues was not relaxed especially with all the military presence. Sydney was much more fun but then it was before the terrorist threats.
I think the sporting achievements were spectacular but I think the Sydney Olympics had a better atmosphere and definitely a better scenery.
