It helps people to gather together to worship their god or gods and also to celebrate significant events in their lives such as birth, marriage or death. Some of these buildings are decorated with images of these gods or other art that helps the people focus on worship. It isn't essential to have a building to worship in though. My mum said that Jesus says in the Bible that where ever 2 or more people meet in his name he will ge there in spirit and this is a definition of a church. Also there are people in some countries whose religion is banned by the government so they meet in groups in secret to worship their god or gods.
